PATRICIA PERDEW
"MS. PAT" CIVIL RIGHTS ADVOCATE AND FORMER RESIDENT OF WESTVIEW

MICHELE PERRY-STEWART

Educator and current westview resident

Patricia Perdew moved to Westview for its proximity to Atlanta with its wealth of activities, and her family. While she now lives in East Point, her daughter, Michele Perry-Stewart, moved to what is now called the family home in 2017, when her daughter was beginning at Spelman. Their hope for the future is that Michele’s son will stay in Westview to raise a family. They want the community to be supportive place for black residents that helps uplift them and find them the resources they need. Ms. Pat says, My people perish for lack of knowledge.” In this interview, Ms. Pat and Michele cover everything from gentrification to the civil rights movement, tying everything back to where Westview has been and where it can go. When things started changing, Ms. Pat says she “told Michelle, something was happening in this neighborhood.” She wants to fight for change that works with the existing community members, including ethical real estate practices. The two agree that a great community, “It’s not us against them; it’s all of us working together.”
